In a significant development for South Carolina women’s basketball, five-star guard Agot Makeer has committed to the Gamecocks, choosing them over UConn and Michigan State. Makeer, a 6-foot-1 talent from Thunder Bay, Ontario, currently plays for Montverde Academy in Florida. She is ranked as the No. 4 overall recruit in the Class of 2025 by ESPN.

This commitment is a notable achievement for Coach Dawn Staley and the Gamecocks, marking their second top-25 recruit for the 2025 class. The first was Ayla McDowell, who signed in November 2024.

Makeer’s decision is particularly impactful as it ends UConn’s streak of signing McDonald’s All-Americans, a rarity for the Huskies. UConn’s 2025 class includes three signees: Kelis Fisher, Gandy Malou-Mamel, and Blanca Quiñonez.

Both Makeer and McDowell have been selected to play in the McDonald’s All-American game on April 1, 2025, representing the East and West teams, respectively.

Fans and analysts alike are celebrating Makeer’s commitment, viewing it as a testament to South Carolina’s growing prominence in women’s basketball under Coach Staley’s leadership.
