Plymouth Argyle are currently battling to stay afloat in the Championship, marking their return to the second tier for the first time since 2010.
The Pilgrims sacked head coach Ian Foster last week after a run of just one win in 11 league games, with the Scouser’s reign being one of the shortest in the league this season.
He had taken over from previous manager Steven Schumacher, who after winning League One with Plymouth last season left in December to take up the vacancy at Stoke City.
Plymouth had been playing in the third tier for three seasons after promotion from League Two in 2020 as they pursued a spot back in the Championship after over a decade away.
The season before they went up they narrowly missed out on the play-offs, and one of the key players behind that push for the top six was central midfielder Panutche Camara.
Camara excelled in his time at Plymouth, but after leaving for Ipswich Town in the summer of 2022, he has failed to kick on in his career.
Camara joined Argyle in August 2020 after leaving Crawley Town, rejecting a new contract offer from the Red Devils.
Schumacher, who was an assistant to Ryan Lowe when Camara arrived in Devon, expressed his keen interest in the Guinea-Bissau international, stating: “He was somebody I was really eager to bring to the club because as a midfielder, I always told Ryan he would be my worst nightmare to play against. With those long legs, you think you’ve got the ball, but he just takes it off you.”
Schumacher accurately described Camara’s prowess, highlighting his physical stature, adeptness at winning balls, and his ability to navigate tight spaces on the field, making him a challenging adversary for opponents. During his tenure at Home Park spanning two seasons, Camara appeared in 95 matches across various competitions, contributing 10 goals and 10 assists. Despite ongoing discussions for a better contract, Camara’s representatives informed Plymouth that he wouldn’t be renewing his contract, leading to his availability for transfer.
As a result, he transferred to Ipswich, securing a deal reportedly worth £500,000 that extends until 2024, a move widely regarded as a significant acquisition for the League One promotion contenders.
