Ipswich Town eyeing the summer acquisition of ex-Sheffield United and Everton midfielder John Lundstram, as per recent reports. The Tractor Boys, leading the Championship, are set to solidify their squad ahead of the summer transfer window.
Despite this, Kieran McKenna’s newly-promoted team is striving for consecutive promotions from League One to the Premier League within just a year, aiming to replicate Southampton’s feat in 2012.
The youthful head coach has instilled an attractive style of play, propelling them to become the highest-scoring team in England’s second tier during the 2023/24 season, compensating for any defensive shortcomings.
Securing automatic promotion is not guaranteed for Ipswich Town. McKenna’s squad must navigate challenging away matches against Hull City and Coventry City, followed by a crucial home fixture against Huddersfield Town on the final day at Portman Road.
However, the recruitment team is already planning for the summer transfer window to bolster the squad with fresh talent. One player linked with the club is Rangers midfielder Lundstram.
According to Turkish journalist Ezgi Alp, Trabzonspor’s interest in signing the former England U20s international has been put on hold as Ipswich Town has emerged as the frontrunner to secure his signature. Lundstram, who is set to become a free agent in the summer, is reportedly seeking a £1.7 million salary, a demand that has also deterred Trabzonspor from pursuing him in the coming months.
This could be a solid move for Ipswich Town, even if they don’t get promoted. Lundstram brings valuable experience from top-flight, Championship, and European football, which could greatly benefit McKenna’s squad. Plus, since he’s a free agent, the club would only need to cover his wages, making it a low-cost, low-risk deal at around £32,000 per week.
