Tennessee baseball has secured hosting rights for an NCAA Tournament regional once again. This marks the third time in the last four seasons that the Vols have hosted. The official announcement came from the NCAA, with the full bracket and pairings set to be revealed at noon ET Monday on ESPN2.
The regionals are scheduled to run from May 31 to June 3, followed by the super regionals on either June 7-9 or June 8-10. The pinnacle event, the College World Series, will kick off at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska, starting on June 14.
How Tennessee baseball has fared as a regional host
Before 2021, Tennessee hadn’t hosted a regional since 2005. In that year, UT secured the No. 3 national seed and triumphed in the regional, winning all three games. The series was highlighted by Drew Gilbert’s dramatic walk-off grand slam in the opener against Wright State. The Vols then defeated Liberty in consecutive games to advance to the super regional stage.
The Vols were the No. 1 national seed when they hosted again in 2022. They blitzed through the regional in three games.
Tennessee won two games against LSU in the Knoxville Super Regional to advance to the College World Series for the first time since 2005. UT lost to Notre Dame in the super regional round in 2022 in three games.
How Tennessee baseball earned a national seed
Tennessee was No. 1 in the RPI entering Sunday’s SEC Tournament title game. It also was the nation’s winningest team with 49 wins, while no other team had more than 45.
The Vols won a share of the SEC regular-season title and advanced deeper into the SEC Tournament than any team that could threaten for the top seed.
