BYU is bringing in John Linehan from St. Joseph’s as an assistant coach, sources confirm. Linehan is already on campus, and an official announcement is imminent. This hire fills the fifth and final assistant coach position allowed by NCAA rules.
An accomplished college player, Linehan played at Providence from 1997-2002 where he finished his career as the all-time D1 leader in steals. His senior year he averaged 12.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 4.5 (!) steals per game. Linehan was a two-time Big East Defensive Player of the Year. After college, Linehan enjoyed a mainly overseas professional career from 2002-2013.
Linehan went into coaching in 2014 and has been a D1 assistant for nearly a decade at several schools. He was also a volunteer assistant for the Delaware 87ers in summer 2015, where he worked under Kevin Young.

Linehan gives BYU a second non-LDS, African-American assistant coach and someone with proven experience at the D1 level. His connections are mainly on the east coach, which will allow BYU to cast its net wider on the recruiting trail. Linehan was also an assistant coach at Georgia when Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards played for the Bulldogs.
BYU will play at his alma mater, Providence, in December as part of the Big 12-Big East battle.
