Detroit Lions to Pursue Aggressive Approach in Retaining Brian Branch for 2024 Season
The Detroit Lions are gearing up for the 2024 NFL season with plans to secure Brian Branch on the field more assertively. Branch, who excelled at the star position during his final season at Alabama and was highly regarded as one of the top safeties in the 2023 NFL Draft, found himself primarily in the slot corner role during his rookie year with the Lions.
According to Detroit defensive assistant Jim O’Neil, the team opted to focus on stabilizing Branch’s position in his first season, but they anticipate expanding his role within the secondary come 2024.
“As he enters his second year, we plan to take a more proactive approach with him,” stated O’Neil during Detroit’s mandatory minicamp. “He’s the kind of player we want out there for every down, so we’re pushing him towards that goal. However, he still needs to earn that role during training camp.”
In his rookie campaign, Branch made significant contributions, amassing 74 tackles, three interceptions, 13 passes defended, seven tackles for loss, and one forced fumble across 15 regular-season games. His performance earned him recognition, tying for fifth place in voting for The Associated Press NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award.
During the Lions’ playoff run, Branch continued to showcase his versatility, contributing 20 tackles, three tackles for loss, and a pass breakup in three postseason appearances as Detroit reached the NFC Championship Game for the first time since 1991.
Despite his impactful rookie season, Branch saw limited action in 10 games, playing less than 75% of the Lions’ defensive snaps. O’Neil expressed confidence in Branch’s ability to transition smoothly into a safety role, noting his adaptability and strong offseason preparation.
“Learning the safety position is just about gaining experience,” O’Neil explained. “Brian has been diligent in the classroom, over-communicating with our coaching staff and secondary unit. Now, he needs to translate that knowledge onto the field, where he already performed admirably as a rookie.”
Heading into the 2024 season, the Lions’ defensive backfield faces adjustments with the departure of key players and the arrival of new talent. Despite these changes, Detroit remains optimistic about Branch’s potential impact, whether at safety, nickel, or potentially in other roles as determined during training camp.
As Branch continues his recovery from an offseason procedure, Lions head coach Dan Campbell anticipates his full participation in training camp, scheduled to commence in July. The team looks forward to Branch’s continued growth and contributions as he progresses into his second NFL season.
