Electric Eels pull off an upset to defeat the Broncos

The Parramatta Eels have bounced back from their wooden spoon performance in the 2023 season to secure a 22-10 upset victory over the Broncos, marking a strong start to their new season.

The Eels capitalized on their chances to give new coach Steve Georgallis a winning debut, with key contributions from experienced players Rachael Pearson, Kennedy Cherrington, and Elsie Albert, who provided a solid foundation with their strong performances.

The Broncos initially had the upper hand when Julia Robinson Julia Robinsonintercepted a cross-kick from Eels halfback Pearson near her own try line and sprinted the length of the field to score the opening points of the match.

However, the Broncos’ lack of discipline allowed the Eels to re-enter the game. The home team committed seven penalties compared to the Eels’ one by halftime. Parramatta capitalized on their 57 percent possession to take a 10-4 lead at the break, with tries from Zali Fay and Rory Owen on debut along their left side.

In the second half, the Eels took the initiative once more after the Broncos conceded another early penalty. The visitors maintained their pressure and scored the first try of the half with dynamic play, this time on their right side, where winger Monique Donovan crossed the line to extend their lead to 14-4.

However, the momentum briefly shifted when the Eels’ kick went dead, giving the Broncos a seven-tackle set. The Broncos capitalized on this opportunity, advancing up the field and eventually scoring when Chelsea Lenarduzzi powered over for Brisbane’s second try of the match.

Despite some late-game frustrations, the Eels managed to regain their composure and maintain their pressure to secure the upset victory.

Next week, the Eels will host the Sharks at Allianz Stadium on Sunday, while the Broncos will face the Roosters in their subsequent match.
