Making an NFL team is always a challenge. Apart from a few standout talents and top prospects, many players have to work tirelessly throughout the summer to secure a spot on the roster. Some are released, seeing their chances slip away, while others are placed on the practice squad, waiting for their opportunity to join the main team. A few, however, manage to impress the coaching staff and make it through the final cuts. This was the scenario across NFL teams last week as every 53-man roster was finalized. For the Buffalo Bills, their final lineup was decided following preseason games against the Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Florida Panthers.
There were roster cuts that disappointed, and even shocked, fans. Frank Gore Jr.’s omission from the final lineup left many fans disheartened, as he was a fan favorite with a well-known last name and had an impressive preseason. However, he was placed on the practice squad. Perhaps the most surprising cut occurred among the defensive backs, where Daequan Hardy—Buffalo’s sixth-round draft pick—seemed poised to become the main special teams returner. But the Bills had other plans. After releasing Hardy, they traded with the New York Jets to acquire rookie Brandon Codrington, resolving the question of who would handle kick and punt returns.
Coaches face tough decisions when cutting players, especially after witnessing their dedication and effort. Yet, the rules allow only 53 players on the final roster. On the bright side, several new faces will finally get their chance in the big league. Among those without previous NFL experience, a few have earned Sean McDermott’s approval for their first NFL season. Rookies like Ray Davis (RB) and Cole Bishop (S) are expected to contribute right away. Additionally, another player who might continue to defy expectations and make an impact is Joe Andreessen.
