Alabama A&M introduces new Head Coach Sam Shade

Alabama A&M University recently introduced Sam Shade as its new head football coach, making him the 22nd leader in the program’s history. A Birmingham, Alabama native, Shade brings a wealth of experience from both his playing and coaching careers. He played as a safety in the NFL from 1995 to 2002 with the Cincinnati Bengals and Washington Redskins. Before his professional career, Shade was part of the University of Alabama’s 1992 national championship team.

As a coach, Shade has achieved success at various levels. He led Pinson Valley High School to a state championship in 2020 and recently guided Miles College to a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) title in 2024. His winning track record, both as a player and coach, was a key factor in his selection.

During his introductory press conference, university officials expressed confidence in Shade’s ability to lead. Alabama A&M President Dr. Daniel K. Wims emphasized his alignment with the university’s values, while Athletic Director Dr Pau.l A. Bryant highlighted Shade’s history of success.

Shade’s appointment follows the tenure of Connell Maynor, who led the Bulldogs to a Black college football national championship in 2020. The university is optimistic about Shade’s potential to build on this legacy and drive future success.
