Having quarterback Kyler Murray available for snaps and leading the offense is immensely beneficial for Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, who lacked Murray’s presence during the previous offseason. Murray was undergoing knee rehabilitation and didn’t return to the field until midway through last season. However, this offseason, Murray has been fully healthy and actively participating in all team activities.
Here is a glimpse of Petzing’s remarks regarding Murray, who had previously praised his offensive coordinator as a “genius” earlier in the offseason:
Petzing commented on Murray’s development as a quarterback, stating, “He’s someone who improves consistently, whether it’s in his physical abilities, mental approach, or leadership qualities. When you approach your job with the level of seriousness he does, you’re bound to see continual growth.”
“I think it’s something that he’s always looking to be a better player, be a better teammate, be a better leader, so the more opportunities he gets to do it, the more he learns from it, just like we do as coaches.”
Kyler Murray wants the ball
Great players want the ball, Petzing said, and he wants those type of players on his team.
Petzing acknowledged that any exceptional player, particularly one of Murray’s caliber, desires to carry the team’s weight. “To a certain extent, they should, and I should too,” Petzing remarked. “He’s that kind of player. I believe he’s struck a good balance between making plays himself and allowing the talent around him to contribute.”
Regarding the “genius” label, Petzing remained modest.
“I fooled him,” he said with a smile. “I think it’s getting that connection. One of the things I’ve always told him is if we’re ever going to get really where we want to be, when I call something, you know exactly why, to the point where you’re almost anticipating a call before I do.”
A confident quarterback, a confident offense
Petzing said the Cardinals offense being a tighter-knit group led by Murray is meaningful.
