Boston Celtics big man Kristaps Porzingis spent more than two seasons alongside Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic, making him well aware of the Slovenian star’s capabilities on the court. Despite Doncic’s inefficient offensive performance in Game 1 against the Celtics, Porzingis understands that the Mavericks’ versatile player will pose a significant threat in Game 2.
Kristaps Porzingis issues Luka Doncic warning as Boston Celtics eye 2-0 series lead vs. Mavericks
“We expect a big response from him. He’s one of the best players and he’s going to bring it so we have to be ready” Porzingis said of Doncic, per Dave McMenamin of ESPN.
In Game 1, Doncic led the Mavericks with 30 points but shot just 12/26 from the field. He grabbed 10 rebounds but managed only one assist. Throughout the 2023-24 NBA regular season, Doncic never had a game with fewer than two assists. Before the Celtics series, his lowest assist count in the 2024 NBA Playoffs was five, which he recorded in three games (twice against the Minnesota Timberwolves and once against the Oklahoma City Thunder).
Porzingis and the Celtics will try to limit Doncic again in Game 2, a task easier said than done despite their success in Game 1. Porzingis is also looking to maintain his strong performance after scoring 20 points off the bench in the Celtics’ 107-89 victory in the series opener.
