The San Francisco 49ers haven’t publicly declared Brandon Aiyuk as trade bait, but there’s a buzz around the league indicating otherwise. A former teammate of Aiyuk has approached the star wide receiver, advocating for a move to the New England Patriots. Negotiations between the 49ers and Aiyuk for a long-term deal are reportedly at a standstill. Although the 49ers stated they don’t intend to trade Aiyuk last month, speculation suggests they might reconsider as the 2024 NFL Draft approaches.
Aiyuk is aiming for a salary befitting a top-tier receiver, around $30 million annually, a figure the 49ers are hesitant to meet. They don’t currently see him as worth that amount. Considering the impending contract extension for quarterback Brock Purdy in the 2025 offseason, the 49ers recognize the need to prioritize their key assets, understanding they can’t retain everyone.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have emerged as a potential trade destination for Aiyuk, although another team might also be considering a move. According to 49ers Webzone, former 49ers wide receiver Kendrick Bourne recently contacted Aiyuk via social media:
However, if circumstances change, one of Aiyuk’s former teammates, Kendrick Bourne, expressed his desire to reunite with the receiver in New England. Bourne, a former fan favorite in the Bay Area, recently tried to recruit Aiyuk via Instagram. The two were 49ers teammates in 2020, Bourne’s last year with the team before signing with the Patriots.
The Patriots could be an intriguing option for Aiyuk’s camp. The Patriots are expected to take a quarterback with the No. 3 pick in the draft. Aiyuk would be a huge help for a rookie with a roster desperate for a pass catcher.
Aiyuk’s two best seasons as a pro have been with Purdy playing in his rookie season (2022) and his second (2023), so he knows how to get along with young quarterbacks.
