LeBron James left Team USA’s 122–87 rout of Brazil in the Olympic quarterfinals after receiving an elbow to the head. He seemed to have a cut above his eye before heading to the locker room for medical attention.
Post-game, Steve Kerr provided an update on James, revealing that the 39-year-old had received four stitches from the accidental facial blow, as reported by Ben Golliver of The Washington Post.
James did not re-enter the game after leaving in the third quarter, but he did come back to the bench in the fourth quarter while the United States clinched their spot in the semifinals.
Before the injury, James had played 17 minutes in Tuesday’s victory, contributing 12 points, nine assists, three rebounds, and three steals. He was one of six U.S. players to score in double figures and led the team in assists.
In his fourth Olympic Games, James has started every match for the United States during the tournament. He is expected to continue as a starter for the team’s semifinal game against Serbia, scheduled for Thursday.
