On October 8, 2024, Vanderbilt University celebrated several football players for their remarkable performances in the team’s historic 40-35 upset victory over the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. This victory, one of the biggest upsets in college football, ended a decades-long drought for Vanderbilt against top-tier teams and showcased extraordinary individual and team efforts that are now being recognized nationwide.
The biggest honor went to Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, who was named the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week. Pavia, a senior, played a pivotal role in leading his team to victory, completing 16 of 20 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns. He also added 56 rushing yards, contributing to his total of 308 yards. His accuracy, efficiency, and leadership on the field were critical in defeating Alabama, a team Vanderbilt had not beaten since 1984. This award marks the first time in Vanderbilt’s history that one of its quarterbacks has earned this prestigious national accolade.
Pavia’s performance was complemented by stellar offensive line play, particularly from Gunnar Hansen, who was honored with the Outland Trophy National Player of the Week award. Hansen’s blocking was instrumental in Vanderbilt’s ability to maintain possession for more than 42 minutes, an essential factor in their victory. The offensive line, led by Hansen, allowed zero sacks and cleared the way for Vanderbilt to rush for 166 yards while holding Alabama to just 84 rushing yards. Hansen’s efforts were pivotal in allowing Pavia time to make key throws, including two touchdowns that gave the Commodores a two-score lead.
The upset also saw several other Vanderbilt players earning honors. Hansen and Pavia were part of a group of four Vanderbilt players who were recognized by the Southeastern Conference (SEC) for their performances. Hansen was named the SEC Co-Offensive Lineman of the Week, while Pavia was awarded SEC Offensive Player of the Week. These SEC honors further solidified the standout efforts made by the team to secure their place in history.
The win marked Vanderbilt’s first-ever triumph over a No. 1 team and ended a 23-game losing streak against Alabama. It also snapped the Commodores’ 0-60 record against top-five teams, signaling a major breakthrough for the program. The victory and subsequent recognitions signal a turning point for the Vanderbilt football team, demonstrating that they can compete at the highest levels of college football.
As the team prepares for future games, including an upcoming match against Kentucky, the national attention on Vanderbilt’s players is sure to boost their confidence and provide momentum. The honors bestowed upon Pavia, Hansen, and others reflect the hard work and dedication that led to one of the greatest upsets in college football thi
s season.
