Ohio State University has officially announced several key additions and promotions to its football coaching staff for the upcoming season. These strategic moves aim to strengthen both the offensive and defensive units, reflecting the program’s commitment to excellence.
Defensive Coordinator: Matt Patricia
Matt Patricia, a seasoned coach with a distinguished NFL career, has been appointed as Ohio State’s new defensive coordinator. Patricia’s extensive experience includes serving as the defensive coordinator for the New England Patriots from 2012 to 2017, during which he secured two Super Bowl titles. He later served as the head coach of the Detroit Lions from 2018 to 2020 and most recently as a senior defensive assistant for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023. He replaces Jim Knowles, who departed to become the defensive coordinator at Penn State.
Offensive Coordinator: Brian Hartline
Brian Hartline, a former Ohio State and NFL wide receiver, has been promoted to offensive coordinator while retaining his role as wide receivers coach. Hartline has been instrumental in developing several first-round NFL draft picks and is expected to continue his impactful work with the wide receivers.
Offensive Line Coach and Run-Game Coordinator: Tyler Bowen
Tyler Bowen, previously the offensive coordinator at Virginia Tech, has joined Ohio State as the offensive line coach and run-game coordinator. Bowen brings a wealth of experience from his tenure at Virginia Tech, where he coached tight ends and quarterbacks. His expertise is anticipated to enhance the Buckeyes’ offensive line performance.
Promotions Within the Staff
In addition to the external hires, Ohio State has promoted several internal candidates:
- Tim Walton: Elevated to co-defensive coordinator, Walton will collaborate closely with Patricia to strengthen the defensive strategies.
- Keenan Bailey: Promoted to co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach, Bailey will work alongside Hartline to refine the offensive game plan.
