Disappointing: Mansfield Town face as Wrexham secures the signing of Leicester City defender Lewis Brunt, dealing a setback to their transfer plans.

The Leicester City defender, instrumental in Mansfield’s promotion to League One, has chosen to join financially robust Wrexham for an undisclosed sum.

Brunt is highly regarded by Stags manager Nigel Clough, who saw Mansfield’s previous offer for him rejected by the newly promoted Premier League team last month.

“At the time, Clough remarked, ‘We submitted a bid that was turned down, and regrettably, there may be a significant gap between their valuation and our financial capabilities.'”

“But we’ll persist in our efforts and also consider the possibility of a loan. Negotiations are continuing.”

“We are definitely keeping him in consideration. He remains our top priority. He performed admirably during his single season in League Two.”

The 23-year-old has signed a three-year deal at the Racecourse Ground. He is the second Premier League player to join Wrexham this summer, following Arsenal goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo also having joined.
