Gabriel Agbonlahor urges Aston Villa to offload a player for £35 million after learning of ‘problems,’ according to Fabrizio Romano.

This summer was destined to be a season of cutbacks at Aston Villa.

Whether or not you agree with the Profit and Sustainability Rules, the penalties Everton and Nottingham Forest faced last season demonstrate the consequences of crossing that line.

Aston Villa, despite clinching Champions League qualification under Unai Emery, are among six top-flight clubs that must generate funds through player sales before this month’s end.

As the identities of these players potentially on the way out have surfaced in recent days, reactions to the imminent exits are likely to vary. The departure of Douglas Luiz, with discussions reportedly ongoing with Juventus according to HITC, is expected to be met with considerable disappointment.

Aston Villa could sell Douglas Luiz and Jhon Duran

Luiz was arguably Aston Villa’s standout performer in the 2023/24 season, elevating his game significantly under Emery and establishing himself as a reliable goal-scorer from midfield.

On the other hand, Jhon Duran’s potential departure might not be felt as deeply. This is especially true if it means Villa can retain key players like top scorer Ollie Watkins, local favorite Jacob Ramsey, and World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Duran, who started just three Premier League matches last season, is only 20 years old and has shown glimpses of his talent, notably with impressive goals against Ajax, Manchester City, and Liverpool. However, Villa supporters may view him as a player whose departure they could accept more readily.

“I believe when Duran has been brought on, he has made an impact,” former Villa captain Gabby Agbonlahor stated on talkSPORT (12 June, 12:40 pm). “He can hold the ball up, score goals, and he’s aggressive and quick.”

According to The Guardian, Aston Villa could potentially earn more than the £35 million fee suggested by Agbonlahor. The young talent, valued at over £40 million, has attracted interest, including informal discussions with Chelsea regarding a potential swap deal involving Conor Gallagher. However, Villa reportedly view such a scenario as unlikely.

What is clear is that Chelsea holds a strong admiration for Jhon Duran.

“Jhon Duran has a long-term contract,” stated Jonathan Herrera, the striker’s agent, to Caracol in May. “Aston Villa is a club that has now qualified for the Champions League, which presents a great opportunity. But he wants to play. He wants to get out there and play. Let’s see. The transfer market is now opening up. The club is exploring some options, and so are we.”

The interest (from Chelsea) has always existed. The fact that (Mauricio) Pochettino leaves the club (should not affect what happens). The one who wants him, in the end, is the club. There has always been an interest.

“Let’s assess how we can manage this and ensure Aston Villa is prepared.”

Meanwhile, HITC reports that Douglas Luiz’s potential transfer to Juventus might involve a swap deal. Aston Villa could receive England U21 winger Samuel Iling-Junior and long-time target Weston McKennie in return.
