The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) recently issued a statement addressing concerns over the accommodation conditions faced by the Fiji Men’s 7s team during a layover at Sydney Airport. This response followed reports on social media suggesting that the team had slept outside the terminal due to inadequate arrangements, sparking public concern about the players’ treatment and welfare.
According to the FRU, the Fiji Men’s 7s team was indeed booked into the Ibis Sydney Airport Hotel, allowing them access to appropriate rest facilities while awaiting their connecting flight. The FRU clarified that while most players rested in the hotel, some coaches and team officials opted to remain outside the terminal to ensure the safety of the team’s equipment and luggage, as airport security only reopened at 2:30 a.m. This measure was taken to safeguard their belongings, with the players rejoining them once the terminal was accessible. The team continued their journey to Dubai shortly after, catching their scheduled flight.
FRU officials emphasized that these arrangements were part of a larger logistical plan by World Rugby, which handles travel and accommodations for teams participating in major international tournaments like the HSBC Sevens Series. FRU noted that the organization remains committed to the welfare and comfort of its players, underscoring that the athletes’ safety and dignity are paramount priorities during any travel or competition.
The FRU further stated that it has taken steps to avoid any future misunderstandings or logistical lapses by coordinating closely with tournament organizers and securing better accommodations when necessary. Officials acknowledged that any perceived lapses in the team’s arrangements were unintentional and reaffirmed their dedication to supporting the Fiji 7s players, particularly as they represent Fiji on the global rugby stage.
This incident follows a separate controversy involving the Fiji Women’s 7s team earlier in the year, where the team had to endure a layover without adequate accommodations, leading to widespread backlash. In response, FRU has apologized and assured that improvements to travel and hotel arrangements have been made, ensuring a smoother experience for both the men’s and women’s teams in future tournaments.
With this clarification, the FRU hopes to address the public’s concerns, asserting that they remain vigilant in upholding the best standards for their teams. They also stressed the importance of unity and trust in the FRU’s efforts to represent Fiji’s rich rugby
heritage.
