The NBA released the complete voting results for the 2023-24 regular season awards. ESPN analyst and broadcaster JJ Redick, who is a top candidate for the Los Angeles Lakers’ head coaching position, voted for LeBron James and Anthony Davis to be on the All-NBA Third Team. Ultimately, Davis was named to the All-NBA Second Team, and James to the All-NBA Third Team. Additionally, Redick did not vote for Davis on any All-Defensive Team, though Davis was still selected for the All-Defensive First Team.
Redick cast his votes for Bam Adebayo, Victor Wembanyama, Rudy Gobert, Alex Caruso, and Herb Jones for the All-Defensive First Team. His choices for the All-Defensive Second Team were Jarrett Allen, Jalen Suggs, Derrick White, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
Anthony Davis was the only player in the league to be named to both an All-NBA team and an All-Defensive team.
As the leading candidate for the Lakers’ head coaching position after the initial round of interviews, it’s notable that Redick didn’t rank James and Davis higher on the All-NBA teams, though his vote might have occurred before he was involved in the coaching search. Through his work as a broadcaster and podcaster, Redick has demonstrated a strong understanding of the league and its top performers. Nonetheless, some might argue that both James and Davis deserved spots on the All-NBA Second Team given their performances this season.
The most egregious sub was Redick leaving Davis off the All-Defensive Team ballots given that he was Los Angeles’ best defender who did everything on the floor for them. Davis finished fourth in NBA Defensive Player of the Year voting, which should have made him an easy choice to be voted All-Defensive First Team.
For the individual awards, Redick voted Stephen Curry for NBA Clutch Player of the Year, Gobert for Defensive Player of the Year, Tyrese Maxey for Most Improved Player, Nikola Jokic for MVP, Wembanyama for Rookie of the Year, Naz Reid for Sixth Man of the Year and Mark Daigneault for Coach of the Year.
Rich Paul confirms LeBron James not involved in Lakers’ head coaching search
There has been considerable discussion about JJ Redick’s potential as the Lakers’ head coach, partly due to the podcast he co-hosts with LeBron James. Their evident on-camera chemistry and shared views on basketball trends suggest Redick could be a good fit for the Lakers. However, LeBron’s agent, Rich Paul, has publicly stated that the superstar is not involved in the Lakers’ coaching search.
