Now that the 2023-24 NBA season has concluded, teams are gearing up for an eventful offseason, and the Los Angeles Lakers are no exception. The Lakers are currently in search of their next head coach following Dan Hurley’s rejection of their offer last week. After Hurley declined, the Lakers have refocused their attention on JJ Redick, who appeared to be a leading candidate for the position.
Redick reportedly underwent an interview for the head coaching position over the weekend, signaling that the Lakers may be honing in on their next leader. Sources suggest Redick made a positive impression on the Lakers’ front office, with Anthony Irwin reporting that he is set to become the team’s next head coach.
If Irwin’s report is accurate, this will be a risky decision by the front office as the former NBA player turned analyst hasn’t held a coaching position in the NBA or the college ranks.
The 39-year-old Redick will have the tough task of trying to get the Lakers back to the top of the Association after getting bounced in the first round of the NBA playoffs by the Denver Nuggets.
The good news for the former NBA sharpshooter is that he’ll have LeBron James and Anthony Davis to lean on, which is a great duo to work with, but also comes with its own challenges.
We saw the Lakers move on from Darvin Ham after the two seasons, where he led the team to an in-season title this season and the Western Conference Finals the year before. Before Ham took the job, Frank Vogel was only the head coach in LA for three seasons and he led them to an NBA title in the bubble.
Nonetheless, whenever the hire is officially announced, it will be interesting to see what Los Angeles does to help Redick because he’ll be under a ton of pressure immediately.
