MINNESOTA VIKINGS Justin Jefferson Sounds Off on Kirk Cousins Leaving Minnesota Vikings

Justin Jefferson recently set a new standard in the wide receiver market this offseason and is recognized as the top player at his position in the league. However, the quarterback situation for the Minnesota Vikings in 2024 is set to undergo significant changes unlike any seen during Jefferson’s career thus far.

Following Kirk Cousins’ departure as a free agent to the Atlanta Falcons this offseason, the Minnesota Vikings are expected to host a training camp competition for the starting quarterback position between Sam Darnold and first-round rookie J.J. McCarthy.

During an interview on The Rich Eisen Show, Jefferson acknowledged feeling somewhat surprised by Cousins’ departure.

“Yeah, and no,” Jefferson said during his appearance. “I always understood Kirk was going to prioritize his business decisions. I sensed things weren’t completely how he wanted them here, especially with the financial commitments to me and others. It seemed like he was seeking a fresh start, a new beginning with Atlanta, starting anew.”

I hold no resentment towards him for that. I appreciate what he’s done for me and what we’ve achieved together, but ultimately, it’s a business. Everyone has to prioritize themselves and their families, and I completely understand that. Now, it’s about moving forward. Regardless of who the quarterback is, I’ll always make the most of the opportunity. I’ll strive to support the quarterback and make their job easier, whether it’s Kirk, Sam Darnold, or J.J. McCarthy.

Jefferson, set to earn over $140 million on his new four-year contract, recorded 392 receptions for 5,899 yards and 30 touchdowns in his first four NFL seasons.

This upcoming season might present Jefferson with his toughest challenge yet, especially considering the uncertainty surrounding the Vikings’ quarterback situation.

While grooming McCarthy could potentially bring long-term benefits for the Vikings, if Darnold starts the season, it’s worth noting that the former third overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft has only achieved a completion percentage above 60% twice in his six-year career so far.

Jefferson, though, is confident that Darnold will hold his own, and then some, this season.”Sam is doing a great job of communicating and connecting with the players,” Jefferson remarked. “He understands his role as the new guy, and it’s important for us to build that bond and chemistry with him. He’s experienced and knows how to engage and communicate with us, not just about football but about various topics. It’s similar to how Kirk and I used to interact. Having Sam, with his veteran mindset, and J.J. McCarthy learning from him, is exactly what we needed. It’ll benefit J.J. tremendously.”
