The Detroit Lions hold the 29th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, and general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell say they have no plans to change their approach.
Eric Woodyard from ESPN interviewed Holmes and Campbell regarding the Lions’ strategy for the 2024 NFL Draft. Despite their advancement to the NFC Championship, the team’s approach to the draft remains unchanged.
“We’re known for selecting the top player available,” Holmes stated during the recent league meetings. “While many emphasize addressing needs, our approach values the best talent. Free agency provides the opportunity to fulfill specific needs.”
Brad Holmes reflects on his strategy, distinguishing between free agency and the draft. He emphasizes that free agency addresses areas of need, while the draft focuses on selecting the best available player. Holmes warns against reaching for needs in the draft, as it can lead to missing out on impactful players.
Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes came to Detroit together in 2021. They have worked together on the last three NFL Drafts with a “best player available” mentality.
In 2021, the Lions drafted All-Pro offensive tackle Penei Sewell and All-Pro star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. Both are considered some of the best at their respective position.
In 2022, the Lions drafted Pro Bowl defensive end Aidan Hutchinson and high-flyer wide receiver Jameson Williams. Both played critical roles in the Lions’ playoffIn 2023, the Lions struck gold in the draft. Running back Jamyr Gibbs, linebacker Jack Campbell, tight end Sam Laporta, and safety Brian Branch were all unequivocally rookie sensations. All four played a vital role in the playoff run to the NFC championship game. All four will be key members of the Lions’ future.
More draft picks have played essential roles for Detroit in their careers, but these names have been stars since entering the league. With at least two superstars per draft, Holmes and Campbell should keep doing what they are doing.
