Following the Texas Longhorns’ 86-80 loss to the Xavier Musketeers in the NCAA Tournament’s First Four, reports have emerged suggesting that the university plans to part ways with head coach Rodney Terry. Despite leading Texas to the NCAA Tournament in each of his three seasons, the team’s recent performance has led to this anticipated decision.
Terry, who took over as interim head coach in December 2022 after Chris Beard’s suspension and subsequent dismissal, has compiled a 62-37 record during his tenure. Under his leadership, the Longhorns reached the Elite Eight in the 2022-23 season and secured a second-round appearance in the following year. However, this season saw a decline, with Texas finishing with a 19-16 overall record and a 6-12 mark in Southeastern Conference play.
In response to the reports about his job status, Terry expressed a deep sense of pride in his contributions to Texas basketball. He reflected on his 13-year association with the program, emphasizing his consistent involvement in NCAA Tournament appearances. Terry stated, “I have a lot of pride in terms of being a Longhorn. I love being at Texas. I don’t think anyone has been a part of Texas basketball that’s been more successful than myself.”
Addressing the uncertainty surrounding his future, Terry added, “At the end of the day, it’s in God’s hands.” He conveyed his belief that any decisions about his role are part of a larger plan beyond his control.
As of now, Texas Athletic Director Chris Del Conte has not made an official announcement regarding Terry’s status. The university’s decision will likely be influenced by a thorough evaluation of the program’s trajectory and performance under Terry’s leadership.
