There is a new rumor suggesting that the New York Knicks might have missed an opportunity to prevent OG Anunoby from entering NBA free agency later this month.
The upcoming weeks will be crucial for the Knicks, as they could significantly impact the team’s roster in the coming seasons. While the organization has been associated with potential blockbuster trades involving players such as Donovan Mitchell and Devin Booker, maintaining the current team for the 2023-24 season will be a priority.
At the end of the month Isaiah Hartenstein and OG Anunoby, two key parts of this year’s team, are expected to test their value on the open market. While the 3-and-D forward is not technically a free agent yet, it is a lock that he will use his player option and bypass the final year of his contract in pursuit of a new long-term deal and a massive raise.
Even though Anunoby is set to opt out of his contract soon, the New York Knicks currently have a special chance to present him with an irresistible offer, thus preventing the risk of losing him to free agency. There are reports indicating strong interest from the Philadelphia 76ers in the 26-year-old player.
Unfortunately, it appears that despite making an offer, the organization did not impress the talented forward.
“Let’s monitor that situation closely. Many expect Anunoby to remain with New York, but there are signs suggesting he might explore other options because he isn’t satisfied with what the Knicks have proposed,” NBA insider Brian Windhorst commented on a recent episode of ESPN’s “Get Up” on Tuesday.
Alan Hahn and Jayson Williams, NBA analysts for the network also claimed they had heard similar rumblings of the Knicks giving Anunoby an underwhelming offer. He is expected to get a max offer that will pay him $35 million annually this summer.
