Wrexham legend Mickey Thomas celebrated his birthday, receiving messages from both Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds. Wrexham’s remarkable ascent in recent years has been incredible to watch.
Having been stuck in the National League for more than a decade, Wrexham fans probably couldn’t have imagined a route to League One.
Wrexham finished 19th in the COVID-hit 2019-20 season, a major drop from a fourth-placed finish in the previous campaign.
Many fans were no doubt just wondering how Wrexham would finally get back in the EFL – and few could have predicted that a Hollywood takeover would make it happen.
Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took over during the 2020-21 season, transforming Wrexham as both a club and a city. Wrexham has since secured back-to-back promotions and is now gearing up for life in League One, continuing their incredible journey.
American fans are growing by the week thanks to the success of the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ series, but it’s important to remember the history of the club.
Everything around Wrexham is so exciting but legends such as Mickey Thomas must not be overlooked during all this new hype.
Thomas started his career with Wrexham and racked up more than 200 appearances for the club before going on to play for the likes of Manchester United, Stoke City and Chelsea.
Thomas made one last return to Wrexham in 1991 and famously scored a superb goal against Arsenal in the FA Cup before hanging up his boots.
On Sunday, Mickey Thomas celebrated his 70th birthday, receiving messages from both Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, who continue to honor the club’s history and tradition.
According to BBC Sport Wales, McElhenney and Reynolds expressed their birthday wishes and appreciation for Thomas’s contributions to Wrexham over the years.
“Mickey! Legend. Happy birthday man, happy 70th birthday. It’s amazing, you look fantastic, see you soon,” McElhenney said.
This message is for Mickey Thomas. Mickey, it’s Ryan. I know you know that I know who you are. Happy birthday buddy. This town owes you a debt of gratitude. I owe you a debt of gratitude. You’re a huge pillar in what is the Wrexham legacy. Tons of love. Happy birthday to you and your family, Mickey,” said Reynolds.
We are sure that those sentiments are echoed by Wrexham fans everywhere and that McElhenney and Reynolds have taken the time to send those messages will mean a lot.
