OREGON CITY Ore. (KPTV) – A 23-year-old man was arrested after trying to stab a police officer in Oregon City Saturday, according to the Oregon City Police Dept.
Just before 1 p.m., police responded to the report of a suspicious person at a Jiffy Lube located at 13851 Beavercreek Road.
Police said the man, later identified as Adonai Gabriel-Escamilla, had been reported as trespassing earlier in the day. When police responded to that earlier incident, they said Gabriel-Escamilla ran away, dodging through traffic.
The Clark County Sherriff’s Office released body camera footage of a deadly confrontation between deputies and a carjacking suspect inside a crowded legion.
When officers responded to the second call, they said Gabriel-Escamilla pulled out a knife and allegedly tried to stab one of them. Then, police said, he again ran away on foot and ducked into a business with customers inside.
A worker at Gnome Grown dispensary said the suspect kicked their door in and locked himself in the building before police chased him out again.
Police said they tried to shut down traffic to contain Gabriel-Escamilla and protect people in the area. Eventually, officers said he dropped the knife and was arrested.
Police took Gabriel-Escamilla to a nearby hospital with injuries. Police did not say how or when he received those injuries, but said he is expected to be OK.
Brandon Neldner owns The Hive Taphouse off of Beavercreek Road and said he saw he saw police tase Gabriel-Escamilla to get him to drop the knife, and his subsequent arrest.
“We were actually sitting out front, heard some noises, sirens had stopped right at this location, I looked out, didn’t see anything, I heard yelling and watched people starting to run out the back of the Gnome Grown facility, cops in tow,” Neldner said. “I think the assailant actually made it all the way down to the intersection before they apprehended him.”
As of about 7 p.m. Saturday, police said they expect Gabriel-Escamilla will be lodged at the Clackamas County Jail once he is released from the hospital. He faces several charges including attempted aggravated murder of a police officer.
Investigators said they are asking anyone with video of the incident to call the Oregon City Police Tip line at 503-905-3505, and reference OCPD case number #24-007805.
