Snooker Scandal: Mark King Banned for Five Years Over Match-Fixing Allegations
Veteran snooker player Mark King has been banned from the sport for five years following his involvement in a match-fixing scandal. An independent disciplinary panel found the 50-year-old guilty of manipulating the outcome of his match against Joe Perry at the 2023 Welsh Open. Suspicious betting activity surrounding the match led to an investigation by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA).
King, who denied the charges, was also found guilty of providing inside information about the match. As a result, he was ordered to pay £68,299.50 in costs. The ban, which began retroactively from March 18, 2023, will run until March 17, 2028. However, King has until November 28, 2024, to appeal the decision.
WPBSA chairman Jason Ferguson expressed disappointment over the incident but reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to preserving the integrity of snooker. “The integrity of this sport will always be our number one priority,” Ferguson stated. “This case is a reminder that we will leave no stone unturned to ensure fair play and maintain trust among fans and stakeholders worldwide.”
The investigation also examined allegations related to King’s 2022 English Open match against John Higgins, in which he allegedly provided inside information. However, these charges were dismissed due to insufficient evidence.
Mark King’s career, which has spanned more than three decades, included winning the 2016 Northern Ireland Open, his sole ranking title. Despite his success, this scandal marks a significant fall from grace for the experienced player, tarnishing his legacy in professional snooker.
