The Pittsburgh Steelers should keep an eye on another potential player in the AFC North. Although he may not start, he is becoming an important piece for the divisional champions.
During the offseason, the Baltimore Ravens recruited another athletic quarterback, Devin Leary from Kentucky, in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Since then, he has made a strong impression and is gaining attention from the team’s quarterbacks coach as they approach training camp.
Now, they’ll be without him for eight regular-season games in 2024 due to the NFL’s decision. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk suggests that Pittsburgh might consider releasing Sutton and starting afresh at slot cornerback.
“In my view, when the eight-game suspension concludes, following the Giants’ Monday Night game, they may opt not to bring him back,” Florio remarked during an interview with 93.7 The Fan. “They might decide by then that they’re content without him. There’s no guaranteed money involved, so they have the option to move on from him once the suspension ends.”
The Steelers could consider internal replacements such as Anthony Averett, Beanie Bishop, Josiah Scott, or Arnold Grayland. Alternatively, they could explore free agency options including Patrick Peterson, Ahkello Witherspoon, or Chandon Sullivan.
Those eight games could heavily influence the team’s choice, especially considering the Steelers face a challenging schedule in the latter part of the season. They might consider retaining Sutton to bolster their roster.
Currently, there are no indications that they intend to part ways with him. During Organized Team Activities and minicamp, they have been distributing more playing time across the position and plan to continue this trend into training camp. As they prepare for the season, they will identify their Week 1 starters and assess their decisions thereafter.
