Unprecedented Rainfall Affects Southern UK, Nottinghamshire Experiences Severe Flooding
Parts of the UK are currently experiencing severe weather conditions, including heavy rain and flooding. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for rain, which is in effect until Friday morning, covering the south of England from Cornwall to East Anglia. This warning predicts potential power cuts and travel disruptions. Nottinghamshire County Council has declared a major incident due to the flooding, as river levels along the River Trent are expected to peak in the evening. The council has advised residents in flood risk areas to prepare for possible evacuations. Currently, there are 212 active flood warnings and over 270 flood alerts across England and Wales. Areas affected include Worcester, Bedford, Shropshire, Gloucestershire, and Sussex. The Environment Agency is advising people in flood-prone areas to take precautions by turning off utilities, moving belongings to higher ground, and ensuring the safety of themselves, their families, and their pets. The BBC Weather Centre warns that there could be up to 40mm of rain in already saturated areas, leading to further flooding. The heavy rain and strong winds are expected to cause difficulties during the evening rush hour, resulting in possible travel problems and disruptions to train services. National Rail has already warned of possible cancellations and delays on various lines. Great Western Rail has advised against starting journeys by rail due to the heavy rainfall and existing flooding.
