Rhodes, Russell Wrap Up Hogs’ First Week of Spring Practice
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas football team wrapped up its first week of spring practice with a promising outlook, as head coach Sam Pittman and his staff continue to evaluate the squad ahead of the 2025 season. Among the key standouts of the week were senior linebacker Drew Rhodes and junior quarterback Michael Russell, both of whom have been making noise in camp with their leadership and improved performances.
Drew Rhodes Leads Defense with Leadership and Passion
Drew Rhodes, one of the top returning players on the Razorbacks’ defense, has made an immediate impact during spring practice. As the team’s vocal leader on defense, Rhodes has demonstrated his ability to rally the unit and set the tone during drills.
“Drew’s been everything we could ask for, both on and off the field,” said Pittman. “He brings a lot of energy, passion, and a wealth of knowledge to the defensive side of the ball. The team respects him, and he’s been a great leader so far in these early practices.”
Rhodes, who was an integral part of the Hogs’ defense last season, has been working to sharpen his skills in both coverage and pass rushing, and it’s clear that his efforts are paying off. His performance in the first week of practice showcased his ability to read plays and direct teammates, especially in the defensive backfield. As the season approaches, Rhodes’ growth and consistency will be crucial for a defense looking to improve on its 2024 performance.
Michael Russell Shines as Quarterback in Spring Camp
On the offensive side, quarterback Michael Russell has displayed an impressive level of growth in the early days of spring ball. After a solid but inconsistent 2024 campaign, the junior signal-caller has returned with a new sense of confidence and a more refined skill set.
Russell’s accuracy and decision-making have been two key areas of focus during the spring, and it’s clear he’s taken those to heart. The young quarterback has shown poise in the pocket, coupled with a newfound command of the offense under offensive coordinator Dan Enos.
“We’ve been really pleased with Michael,” said Pittman. “He’s made some great throws this week, and he’s been very focused on the little things – footwork, reading defenses, and leading the offense. He’s come in with a purpose this spring, and it’s great to see that growth.”
With the departure of key players from the offense, Russell will be tasked with guiding the team’s attack, and this week’s progress in practice has sparked hope that he could be ready to take on the challenge in 2025.
Early Impressions, Moving Forward
The first week of spring practice has also allowed coaches to evaluate the younger players vying for spots on the depth chart. Freshmen and underclassmen have had opportunities to showcase their abilities, and there have been some notable performances.
While there’s still plenty of work to do before the team begins its 2025 season, Rhodes and Russell’s growth and leadership are certainly two bright spots in the early stages of spring practice. As Arkansas continues to prepare for the fall, the team will rely on these veterans to guide the way as they seek to return to contention in the SEC.
Next week, the Razorbacks will continue to build on the foundation they’ve set during this first week of practice. The coaching staff will begin to install more complex schemes and evaluate the depth chart as they work toward finalizing their roster for the upcoming season.
As Pittman put it, “It’s been a great first week. We’ve made progress, but we’ve still got a lot of work ahead. But the guys are excited, and we’re ready to keep getting better.”
With Rhodes and Russell leading the charge, the Razorbacks are off to a strong start as they build toward the future.
