According to football finance expert Kieran Maguire, Wrexham AFC might encounter significant obstacles to success upon their potential promotion to League One. The team, currently positioned second in League Two with 79 points, could secure promotion as early as Saturday if they defeat Forest Green Rovers at home, provided MK Dons and Barrow do not win their matches against Mansfield Town and Gillingham.
The potential for consecutive promotions has fans buzzing, and the recent financial reports of the club, owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, underscore its ability to attract quality players. In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2023, Wrexham’s wage bill totaled £6.9m, a figure likely to rise in League Two. Manager Phil Parkinson has consistently drawn talent from higher leagues, with recent signings including James McClean and Steven Fletcher, reinforcing the club’s competitive edge.
Maguire believes that replicating their success in League One may prove challenging for Wrexham due to the higher wages demanded by Championship-caliber talent, which could be beyond the club’s financial means.
In an interview with the Fearless in Devotion podcast, the author of ‘The Price of Football’ stated that the owners were keen on fast-tracking Wrexham’s progress through the National League and preferably into League Two. He mentioned the possibility of recruiting players from League One, paying them accordingly, and using this advantage to secure promotions due to the absence of financial fair play regulations in the National League. This strategy also holds some effectiveness in League Two, where Wrexham’s higher revenues allow them to outbid many other clubs.
