The group, spearheaded by ex-Western United CEO Maurice Bisetto, will assume ownership of the Jets from a coalition of other A-League clubs who have been supporting the team since 2021. Maverick Sports Partners’ purchase of the Jets hinges on approvals from the Australian Professional Leagues (APL) and regulatory procedures from Football Australia, which include fit and proper person assessments.
Bisetto, instrumental in establishing Western United and their introduction to the Isuzu UTE A-League in 2019, now serves as Director at Maverick Sports Partners. He emphasizes that the new ownership group for Newcastle intends to bolster the club’s ties to the local area, boost attendance, secure financial support from corporate and government allies, and nurture young, local talent through the club’s academy to excel in both the Liberty A-League Women and Isuzu UTE A-League Men.
Bisetto expressed confidence in the club, the A-Leagues, and its players, affirming their commitment to forging success for the Jets and the local area. He highlighted the impressive football culture in the region, noting its historical fanbase and active participation, emphasizing the goal of uniting these
supporters for both the Men’s and Women’s games.
We aim to diligently engage with the community to strengthen the Jets’ bond. In addition to expanding our support among young fans and families, we seek to rally the entire football community behind our team. This could involve joining as a member, attending matches, or simply purchasing a Jets jersey.
We recognize the thriving economy in Newcastle and the Hunter region, which played a significant role in our decision to support the Jets. While we are dedicated to ensuring a competitive football club, sustainable success requires the support of corporate and government partners within the region. Regarding talent, we are impressed by the emerging local players from development systems across Northern NSW and the Jets Academy.
At Maverick Sports Partners, we are fully dedicated and immensely thrilled about the potential at Newcastle Jets. We view this as the start of a fresh chapter for the club and eagerly anticipate crafting a remarkable institution with the backing of this community.
Following the confirmation of Maverick Sports Partners’ acquisition, Jets CEO Mattiske expressed gratitude to the departing ownership group for recognizing the club’s significance to the local community.
Today marks a momentous occasion for both the club and the community as we officially announce Maverick Sports Partners as the new owners of the Jets,” he stated. “In the past three years, we’ve laid a solid groundwork for the club’s future, and it’s thrilling to embark on a new chapter with incoming owners who recognize the potential of this club, this community, and football overall.
Throughout our discussions, Maurice Bisetto, the consortium representative, and his associates have shown a profound comprehension of football and effective strategies for achieving success. They also possess a strong grasp of this community, and their plans align closely with the existing initiatives. “I am confident that the Group will introduce fresh perspectives, forge new connections, and leverage their extensive experience to propel the club’s growth in the future,” Mattiske conveyed.
As we transition to a permanent ownership arrangement, it’s crucial to recognize the steadfast support offered by the outgoing ownership group throughout the past three and a half years. These owners recognized the significance of the club to both the local community and the broader A-Leagues competition. “They have played a pivotal role in the club’s history, and on behalf of all Jets fans and stakeholders, I want to express gratitude for their dedication and contributions,” stated Mattiske. “Their immense support for the club will always be remembered.”
