Clint Gutherson has eased worries about Zac Lomax’s potential move to Parramatta next season, highlighting the hiring of Jason Ryles as head coach as a reassuring development for the club. Following extensive speculation, the Eels officially announced Ryles’ signing for a four-year term starting in 2025, choosing him over other contenders such as Josh Hannay and Dean Young. Ryles brings substantial experience from his roles as an assistant coach at the Storm and Roosters, and from his stints in rugby union with the Wallabies and England.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Gutherson acknowledged that the decision had been prolonged, but expressed readiness to focus on the future following a challenging 18-month period.”He expressed relief that a decision had been reached, allowing us to move forward,” he remarked. “It might have taken longer than expected, but they needed to ensure thoroughness in their decision-making process.”
“The front office handled everything according to their plan and kept us informed throughout. Their decision was independent of our input, and they were clear about their intentions.
“Now that it’s settled, we can focus on the remainder of the year, and Ryles can implement his vision next season.”
Despite a strong push for interim coach Trent Barrett to stay on permanently, Parramatta officials couldn’t overlook Ryles’ impressive track record and believe he can lead the club to its first premiership since the 1980s.
One of Ryles’ initial priorities is ensuring that Lomax feels secure, especially since the Dragons winger committed to joining the Eels before Brad Arthur was dismissed as coach.
According to the captain, Lomax’s move was unquestioned.
“He didn’t hesitate at all,” Gutherson stated.
“He’s been regularly discussing football with me, so there was no hesitation. He’s eager for the change… he’s an outstanding player and we’re excited to have him.
“There was never any uncertainty about his decision.”
Gutherson also mentioned to The Sydney Morning Herald that he would consider changing positions next year to make room for promising youngster Blaize Talagi, who has caught the attention of several NRL teams.
