NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported Wednesday that cornerback Cam Sutton is signing with the Steelers, according to Sutton’s agents. Pittsburgh later confirmed the one-year deal and announced the release of receiver Izaiah Gathings to make room on the roster.
The 29-year-old, who played his first six seasons under Mike Tomlin, joined Detroit last offseason. In 2023, Sutton had significant difficulties on the field. Following off-field issues this offseason, including an arrest warrant for an alleged domestic violence incident, the Lions released him in March. Sutton later surrendered to the police and entered a pretrial diversion program for misdemeanor battery charges.
Cornerback depth was a concern for the Steelers this offseason. Joey Porter Jr. showed the potential to be a top CB, and the trade for Donte Jackson gave Pittsburgh a strong top-two duo, but depth remained an issue.
Sutton’s final season in Pittsburgh was his best. Next Gen Stats reported he allowed a career-low 44.4% completion rate and -8.5 receptions over expected. If he can return to that level of performance, the Steelers’ secondary will be more solid in 2024.
